Last Update: 22/06/2009 08:37:25 The new head of Surrey Wing Air Training Corps, Wing Commander Frank Xavier, got a chance to meet those in his command at the annual Wing Staff Conference. Representatives from every Squadron in the wing together with wing staff attended the event at the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre at Headley Court near Leatherhead. The conference was timed to follow on from the Air Cadet Organisation Conference to allow the Wing Commander to brief the staff on the latest strategies and plans for the air cadets over the coming year. The staff were also briefed by the specialist Wing Staff Officers on the latest in the specific areas. The most awaited of which was the details of the new L98A2 Cadet rifle. The assembled staff even got to get their hands on the rifle which will revolutionise target shooting in the cadet forces. On seeing the new rifle Wg Cdr Xavier commented, "This is the most exciting development. The greater simplicity of the new self-loading rifle will allow cadets to shoot with greater accuracy and increase their enjoyment of this popular sport." Included in the day's programme were breakout sessions where the attendees discussed ideas on how to meet the key objectives of the organisation's strategic aim of increasing cadet numbers to 50,000 nationwide by 2018. The ideas looked at recruitment strategies as well as activities that can raise the profile of the Air Cadets in the local community. The Cadet Vocational Qualifications Organisation (CVQO) gave a presentation on the range of qualifications available to both cadets and adult staff through their involvement in the cadet forces.
